Identify the work you want to do
Separate general site-support roles from positions in a specific trade. Residential building, commercial fit-outs, civil work and maintenance can involve different materials, teams and schedules. Read the duties before treating two similarly titled positions as equivalent.
If a listing uses terms such as apprentice, helper, journeyman or supervisor, ask the employer what experience and responsibilities they mean for that position. Do not assume that your experience meets a licensing or certification requirement without checking it.
Explain your contribution to a project
Describe the work you personally carried out: the trade, the type of project, the materials and tools you used, and whether you worked independently or with supervision. If you read plans, coordinated deliveries or organized a crew, give a short factual example.
A project portfolio can help explain experience where appropriate. Use only material you have permission to share, and leave out customer details or confidential information. If you list training or credentials, include accurate names and current status.
Check travel, tools and site requirements
Ask whether the position is based at one site or moves between projects. Confirm the reporting location, start time, expected schedule and travel expectations. An employer's office address may not be the address where you will work each day.
Clarify what equipment the employer provides, what you are expected to bring and what training happens before work starts. Ask about site-specific safety procedures and supervision. The answers should be specific to the actual job.
Review the terms before committing
Check whether the opportunity is described as employment, temporary work or a contract, and ask the employer to explain the arrangement. Review the pay period and expected hours rather than comparing headline numbers alone.
